Cultural Competency Workshop Series
Why Cultural Competency? Over the last few decades, Minnesota’s demographics have been changing. Immigrants and refugees have been coming from all over the world and have settled throughout our state. Our 2008 Cultural Competency Workshop Series will help you learn more about these new members of our community and will build your understanding of the economic and cultural benefits they bring with them.
Who Should Attend: Early Childhood Educators, Community Organizers, Health Care Service Providers, K-12 Educators, Human Services Providers, City and County Employees and Faith Based Community Members.

August 12, 2008 | 6:00-7:00PM Session 1 – Building Common Ground This workshop allows participants to reflect on their own ancestry in an effort to build their understanding and help them overcome the challenges of reaching out to new immigrants and refugees. September 16, 2008 | 6:00-7:00PM Session 2 – An Introduction to Somali Culture and Family Systems In this workshop you will learn about Somali history, culture, family systems, beliefs and practices. Participants will leave this training feeling more prepared to confidently engage their Somali clients, colleagues and neighbors. Presenter: Abdimalik Askar, Training Manager
October 21, 2008 | 6:00-7:00PM Session 3 – Latinos in Minnesota In this workshop participants will enhance their knowledge about the history of Latinos in Minnesota, their demographic profile, future trends, and the challenges and opportunities Latinos create for our communities. Presenter: Josh Becerra, Director of Cultural Enterprise
November 20, 2008 | 6:00-7:00PM Session 4 – An Introduction to Hmong Culture and Family Systems In this workshop you will learn about Hmong history, culture, family systems, beliefs and practices. Participants will leave this training feeling more prepared to confidently engage their Hmong clients, colleagues and neighbors. Presenter: Vang Yang, Family Worker
December 16, 2008 | 6:00-7:00PM Session 5 – The Refugee Journey This workshop gives participants the opportunity to experience the refugee journey and build their understanding of the challenges and opportunities new refugees face after moving to a new land.
