Demographic shifts in the coming decades will result in a different Twin Cities region than we know today and have known in years past. These shifts are not just in our future, these changes are well underway, especially when it comes to racial and ethnic diversity in the region. The trends show:
- Each of the seven counties in the region added residents of color since 2000. In 2013, one of every four residents of the region was a person of color.
- In seven cities (with at least 20,000 residents) at least 30% of the population are residents of color.
- In some cities, racial and ethnic changes are occurring rapidly. Most cities included in the data (39) show at least a 9 percentage point increase in the share of people of color between 2000 and 2013.
