Christy began her advocacy journey in preschool when she served on the board of her boys' community-based, cooperative preschool. In 1994 she joined the site council at Afton Lake Elementary, the first site council to have parent representation in the Stillwater schools. From there she pursued her interest in community development around schools by helping helped people find common ground to move forward. “People want a well-educated population. There are many ways to get at that, but with a shared vision of the end result it becomes possible for communities to move forward.” Christy gained experience in legislative work and local levies as a member of the Stillwater Board of Education, 2000-2004 (Chair, 2003-2004). She attended the first Parent Summit where she saw the need for parents to come together at the state level, “Too often we look at things in silos. ‘My child’s school.’ ‘My town, my school district.’ ‘Early childhood. K-12. Higher Ed.’ We need to do a better job of bridging the silos.” Christy has two boys now in senior high and at St. John's University. She enjoys spending time with them cross-country skiing, biking and kayaking; essentially doing anything outdoors. Christy also serves on the Stillwater Community Education Advisory Board and is a member of the Board of Directors for Camp Widjiwagan, a YMCA camp outside of Ely, Minnesota, that offers year-round environmental programs. "Public schools are the engine that drives strong communities. We can all agree we want a well-educated population. Parents United gives parents and citizens a voice in figuring out how to accomplish that." —Christy Hlavacek | |||||||||||||||||||||||
