Head Start

Head Start is provided to low-income children ages birth to five and their families. The program is designed to meet emotional, social, health, nutritional and psychological needs of the children, and promote the economic self-sufficiency of the parents. There are 34 Head Start grantees, including 23 community action agencies, 3 single purpose agencies, 1 school district and Tribal governments. State funds are allocated based on: (1) grantees’ share of federal Head Start funds, and; (2) grantees’ proportion of eligible children in the grantee service area who are not being currently served.
