I live in Farmington and am co-chairing the Strong Farmington Schools VOTE YES committee to pass a 3-part levy referendum in District 192.

Being involved in this way has been a very educational experience. For one thing, I have seen countless individuals donate their time and resources to the campaign effort. While their energy and financial support is much appreciated and necessary for this election, it is a waste of hours and financial resources could have been directed to the schools, spent in the classrooms and given to their families. Personally, it has been an exhausting process that has cut significantly into time I would be volunteering at my children’s school.

Equally frustrating was discovering that our greatest challenge for passing the levy referendum has been overcoming the messages that come from state leadership that would have Minnesota citizens believe that public schools in Minnesota have been sufficiently and responsibly funded. These spun messages capitalize on the confusing nature of school financing, and take advantage of Minnesotans who trust that our state administrators are putting the public welfare before political aspirations and personal agendas. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case.  That being said, I have faith in the underlying integrity of our leadership, and look forward to wise and responsible decisions in the future, as well as a climate of honesty and trust, that will restore Minnesota public schools to past national standings.

Sincerely,
Amee Christensen
