At one time this country believed a child should be picked up and carried as far as our strength would allow, regardless of whom they belonged to. Lately, we hear harsh attacks against public schools from those with arms and hearts tightly folded. They would have us believe that the best way is to let the kids suffer while we teach schools a lesson in fiscal responsibility. That’s not the way we do it here. We work together to fix the problems. But we never, ever stop carrying the kids.
