Marita has always enjoyed reading and listening to music with her two daughters, “We continue to talk about what they’re reading. They recommend books to me and I do the same.” The last two years, Marita and her daughters coordinated a benefit for Afghani students at Macalester College Weyerhauser Chapel, “My daughter Claire introduced me to a trilogy by Canadian author Deborah Ellis whose stories are based on interviews with children in the refugee camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Ms. Ellis donated all of the proceeds of her book to an organization in Afghanistan. We organized a collection of student and professional musicians who performed for a two-hour concert. The performers included students from several schools, but primarily Saint Paul Central High School. After the concert we provided Afghani food prepared by Café Brenda chef, Nick Schneider. At the request of the students who participated last year we are planning a third concert. It promises to be a wonderful afternoon.” Marita first became involved in public education issues at the state level in January 2003 when she joined the steering committee for Save Our Schools, a one-year campaign that was the genesis of Parents United for Public Schools. She served on the planning committee for the 2004 and 2005 Parent Summits and helped with planning for the March 2005 public education rally at the state capitol. Marita also serves on the steering committee for the Minnesota Children’s Platform Coalition, a group working to provide a unified voice on behalf of all children and to strengthen public will to help all children reach their full potential. “Parents United recognizes that parents are the best advocates for their children. This organization offers parents the opportunity to engage in the process of supporting children in one of the most important areas of their lives. Parents United offers a voice to parents in an arena where ultimately they are the most powerful advocates for their children.” —Marita Bujold | |||||||||||||||||||||||
