It is a week before the vote on the levy for the Brainerd School District. Our community has been vocal, for and against the referendum. As is usual in these types of discussions, the words have become bitter and divisive. It is disheartening that our children’s futures should be thrown out for a vote.

School districts who have been good stewards of taxpayer’s money are punished when they maintain a balance. Boards struggle to plan, not having any clue what funding will be available from the state. Communities are torn apart over doing what’s best for kids, against the apathy and hostility of some people who don’t have kids in school anymore.

There must be a better way to ensure our children’s futures. Schools should not have to waste valuable time and money on referendums; time should be spent on educating rather than begging for money. Stripping schools of art and music and physical education and Advanced Placement and library programs and vocational programs only teaches our kids that adults don’t value these subjects.

Our state has become far too reliant on local levies to fund the basics that go into educating and providing opportunities for our children. How can we ensure that our students have a world-class education when districts have to keep playing this lottery forced on them by the state? There must be a better way.

Thank you,

Chris Kelly
