Marty first became involved in local school issues in 1998 when he joined the Site Based Leadership Council at Kenny Community School, Minneapolis Public Schools.  He then became involved in the Site Council’s budget committee which made funding, staffing and program decisions at the local school level based on the district’s budget allocation.

After several years of repeated budget cuts Marty was instrumental in forming a Southwest Minneapolis Parent Budget group, which came together to address the growing and repeated budget shortfalls with the MSP District administration.  He was one of a number of parents and volunteers to receive the 2003 Minneapolis Parent Volunteer Award.

Marty’s involvement with the Minneapolis Public Schools led to his participation in the formation of Parents United in the spring of 2002.  He currently serves on the Anthony Middle School Site Council and is the Anthony Middle School representative on MPS District Parent Advisory Council.

Marty enjoys spending time with his two children and camping, skiing, sailing, playing volleyball, and photography.

"My involvement in public education issues has taught me how the active involvement of parents can and does have a significant impact on public education issues - both locally and at the state level.  I have seen first hand the impact that parental involvement has had on decisions made at my local schools, within my School District, and more recently at the state level.  As committed and involved parents, we need to continue our discussion of public education issues, which are so critical to the future success of our children, our state, and our country."
