Sent to Governor Pawlenty, Representative Kelliher, Representative Abler, Senator Pogemiller, and Senator Jungbauer: My 2nd grade daughter looked up from eating her eggs this morning and asked "What will happen to my school if the levy doesn't pass?" I, of course, told her that we would deal with that concern after November 6. She responded, "I'm glad you are helping, Mom." With our busy schedule, I have had to bring my kids—kindergarten son, also—to levy meetings, PTO meetings, school board meetings, and meetings of the Parent Legislative Team (PLT) of Anoka-Hennepin. We bring books, and crayons, and, yes, Gameboys. But she listened. I thought keeping on the run this fall would be difficult for our family, but my kids are the most supportive. They have been fantastic at meetings, allowing me to learn, talk, and connect with our community. As my daughter so breathtakingly demonstrated, they have also learned about the effort it takes to keep education properly funded and they understand that we are working to protect their future. I have worked for seven years with the PLT to help reform state education funding; I am on my second Anoka-Hennepin levy campaign; I am tired, frustrated, and driven mad by the instability of education funding. This is a terrific district--innovative, thrifty, and communicative. Seven years on the Systems Accountability Committee and three years on PTO have led me to send this message: Change the way our schools are funded. We need stability. Volunteers should be focusing on academics and kids, not door knocking and levy questions. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
