April 21, 2009 - Stand Up For Education!

Association of Metropolitan School Districts

We need your help contacting the Governor and Legislators now!

Problem:
Education funding is at risk.  In just one month, our state leaders will be setting the funding level for our schools for the next two years.  While the House is proposing a two-year freeze on education funding, the Senate proposes a 3.2 percent cut per year for the next two years. Both proposals include new state revenue through various tax increases that will likely be vetoed by the Governor.  Without new revenue, the cuts to education will probably be even more severe than currently proposed.

A myth has been perpetuated that K-12 education funding has been protected from cuts in the past.  But the reality is that education funding was cut by $185 million in 2003, the basic formula has not kept pace with inflation since 1991 and special education has never been fully funded by either the state or the federal government.

Solution:
Education funding must be protected.  Now is the time to begin to phasing in the funding framework outlined in the New Minnesota Miracle proposal.  Districts need real relief from the vast array of mandates imposed on local school boards.  State tax increases and public employee salary freezes may be necessary to help us achieve our long-term goals.

Action Needed:
Call or e-mail the Governor, legislative leaders and your local legislators to express your support for protecting funding for public education.  Ask them to move forward with the New Minnesota Miracle.  Tell them that all options must be on the table including state tax increases and a statewide salary freeze for public employees.

Deadline for responding: Please take action by Friday, April 24, 2009.
