St. Paul – House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Majority Leader Tony Sertich released the House budget framework today that maintains Minnesota’s commitment to Early Childhood, K-12 and Higher Education. “The day the budget deficit was announced in December, we began a conversation with Minnesotans that continues today,” said Speaker Kelliher. “The overwhelming message was that Minnesotans are willing to work together to address this economic crisis, but they also want real changes that will make our state economy healthy into the future. We listened to their advice; the framework we are announcing today reflects both our priorities and our commitment to Minnesotans.” “We have learned the lessons from previous generations who experienced similar economic struggles,” said Majority Leader Sertich. “We believe the best thing we can do is provide opportunities to help Minnesotans get back on their feet. By investing in K-12 and higher education, we will prepare our young people for jobs, strengthen our economy and help Minnesotan regain a competitive edge.” “Early in this session, we held an Early Childhood Summit that focused the legislature on the importance of preparing our youngest learners for success,” continued Speaker Kelliher. “Educators, economists and business leaders agree that investing in younger children will not only save us money in the future, it also lays the foundation for a strong and vital workforce.” Speaker Anderson Kelliher and Majority Leader Sertich said they are committed to working with their colleagues in the Senate and the Governor to arrive at a fair, responsible and honest budget solution for Minnesota. “Minnesotans are exhausted by a lack of leadership on these issues,” said Sertich. “A responsible approach is the right approach; balancing this budget responsibly means setting clear priorities and solving problems boldly and honestly.” “Governor Pawlenty is balancing the budget for the next election, we are balancing for the next generation,” said Speaker Kelliher. “We heard loud and clear how much we all value the Minnesota way of life. Our rich tradition of excellence in education, healthy living and a robust job market will be the benchmarks of the next House budget.” | |||||||||||||||||||||||
