Precinct caucuses are the beginning step of the 2006 political season, and an excellent place to make your voice heard in the political process.

What is a "Precinct Caucus?"
A precinct caucus is a group of individuals who live in a certain geographic area, or "precinct", and support a particular political party who meet to do their Party business.  Precincts are the basic political unit upon which political parties in Minnesota are organized and are essential to our grassroots network.  Precinct caucuses are the beginning of the process that Minnesota political parties use for choosing candidates and the issues we will support in the next elections.  The choices are especially important because the future of our state and country will be affected by the candidates we elect.  Those individuals who attend our caucuses will have a say in these issues.

What happens at caucuses? At 7:00 p.m., the caucus will be called to order.  The main orders of business for each caucus are the following:

  • Election of Delegates and Alternates
  • Discussion of Issues – Caucuses provide a forum for you to voice your views on issues.  You can submit and vote on resolutions that the party conventions may make a part of the party platform.
  • Election of Local Party Leadership

How do you find out where your precinct will meet?
The precinct caucus locations are available through Hennepin County (http://www2.co.hennepin.mn.us/voterinfo/caucus/options.htm) or the Minnesota Secretary of State (www.sos.State.mn.us) "Find Your Polling Place and Districts" service.  You can also call your county auditor or political party offices for caucus locations.

Presenting resolutions at caucuses:
At precinct caucuses, attendees can present resolutions for inclusion in the party platform.  Presenting resolutions brings attention to particular issues of concern in the party, and supports party legislators in the legislative activities related to the issue under consideration.

We request that you present and adopt the following resolutions in your Party's Caucus:

Parents United, the statewide public education advocacy group, has proposed the following resolution for presentation at party caucuses:

"Let it be known, we resolve that every Minnesota child receive the equal opportunities and investment from public policy that will help them reach their full potential."

The Area C Working Group, an organization of parents from South Minneapolis schools, has focused it attention this year on reducing class size. The group has drafted the following resolution for presentation at party caucuses:

"Be it resolved that the State of Minnesota will require and enable the reduction of public school class size across the state through the enactment of legislation providing additional financial resources to schools and school districts."
