Dear Governor Pawlenty, I am writing to address your stance on no new taxes. I just want to point out what public school families must do to support our schools. Perhaps you know this as your children are in public school. As a family we have participated in six separate fundraisers for two public school programs, both selling and buying items. As a parent of three children, twins in first grade and a 2 year old in ECFE, I value any extra time I might have. I sure wish I didn't have to take this time away from my family trying to raise the needed funds for these public school programs. With impending cuts to both of these programs, I foresee a lot more of my time and money going to these fundraisers. If you ask me, this is a far greater "burden" on our family. I would MUCH rather pay a new or increased income or sales tax that supports our public school programs. The unfortunate thing about fundraising for schools is that families can never raise enough to cover the costs of the staff that are being cut. Believe me, parents at our elementary school have brainstormed over this. Another thing is that there are many companies out there making big profits off of children selling their products for them. Children who sell wrapping paper and candy bars are replacing adult sales representatives. I wonder what state revenues are lost through this growing method of funding our schools? If you want to remove a burden to families, let us pay taxes to fund our schools.
